7. The First Bridge

The First Bridge

Along the Sturgeon River there were many places that were crossed by traditional trails. The soft, silty bottom always made it a difficult task, whether on foot, horseback, or by raft.

Tiring of his unreliable ferry in 1862, Father Lacombe organized the building of what became the first permanent bridge west of the Great Lakes. He is reported to have told his parishioners during mass, “…there is only one solution: build a bridge. I am asking you for your help. Those who will work will cross for free!”1 It remained a toll bridge until 1885.

In 1863, Hudson’s Bay Company Governor-in-chief Alexander Dallas found out about the bridge and ordered Edmonton’s Chief Factor William Christie to remove it. He was against inviting settlers to farm instead of trapping furs for the company. Christie quietly agreed but, because the bridge was so important for the area, he did nothing to have it removed.

On several occasions floods and ice damaged the bridge. It was rebuilt in 1876, 1890, and then replaced by a steel bridge in 1913. The current bridge was built in 1984.

Bruin Inn
