Museum Moment: Our summer student’s experiences before moving onto new things

My name is Erica Gonzalez; I recently graduated from the University of Alberta and began working with the Arts and Heritage Foundation of St. Albert (AHF) in the summer as their Canadian Summer Jobs student. As my time with AHF is coming to an end, I wish to share some of the wonderful experiences I had with the Musée Héritage Museum and the AHF.

Since the last time I had the opportunity to share my experiences with you, I have been working on several projects. The major project I was involved with was creating the digital 3D artifacts for the Musée Héritage Museum online school programs. Having no prior background in photography or artifact digitization, I learned so many new skills. I have gained a new appreciation for how technology can be used in a museum setting. I hope these digital artifacts will allow students to interact and appreciate the history and artifacts despite not being able to hold the objects physically.

I have also helped with cataloguing artifacts in the museum collections and going through the Archives database.  I have learned a lot about how to take care of artifacts in the collections and the importance of being innovative. I have expanded my knowledge about Archives as well as experiencing the joy of looking through photographs that bring the history of St. Albert to life.

Overall, the Musée Héritage Museum and the AHF allowed me to gain a new perspective and skills in museum work. More importantly, I am happy that I got the privilege of working with, and getting to know, the wonderful staff of the Musée Héritage Museum and the AHF.
