As we count down to the opening of the XXIII Olympic Winter Games this year in PyeongChang, the Musée Héritage Museum Archives is excited to highlight one set of records in celebration of the Olympics.
On Feb. 13-28, 1988, the XV Olympic Winter Games were held in Calgary. In preparation, the Olympic torch arrived in St. John’s, Newfoundland, on Nov. 17, 1987 to begin an 18,000 km relay across Canada to Calgary borne by some 7,000 torch bearers.
The St. Albert Olympic Celebration and Torch Committee organized activities and celebrations leading up to this event. Activities included sports clinics for youth, Olympic art demonstrations by St. Albert children, ice sculptures, a simulated bobsleigh ride, and an Olympic Torch party.
The Olympic torch relay passed through St. Albert on Wednesday, Feb. 10, 1988 on its way to Calgary. Watch the video below to see archival video footage of the ceremony.
