Local photographer Song Despins has spent a lot of time observing the Northern Lights and capturing them in all their different shapes and colours.
Song became so familiar with these light shows that she recognized a unique phenomenon and captured it with her photographs, confirming what she saw in the night sky with other Alberta Aurora Chasers. Her collection of photographs provided scientists with data they needed to identify this unique phenomenon, which they called STEVE (Strong Thermal Emission Velocity Enhancement).
