From the Archives: St. Albert in the Future

On January 12, 2017, a 50-year time capsule was unveiled in the lobby of St. Albert Place to celebrate St. Albert’s Community Vision and Pillars of Sustainability. The Musée Héritage Museum was involved in advising the packing of the time capsule and preservation of items inside it.

Here at the museum, we would like to celebrate by looking back in the past to see how the future was envisioned.

In 1986, the St. Albert Public Library organized the “Treblast Year 2111 Creative Writing Contest” to promote the Summer Reading Program. Children submitted pieces about what they thought St. Albert would be like 125 years in the future. The winners had their writing printed in the St. Albert Gazette and displayed in the library for the entire summer.

Cheryl in grade 2 at Ronald Harvey Elementary School was one of the winners of the creative writing contest. Enjoy reading her imaginative view of St. Albert in the year 2111!

St. Albert 125 Years From Now

“I think St. Albert will have a new way to eat supper. They will have a normal sized pill and in that pill it will have all the stuff that makes us grow. I think St. Albert will have really big skyscrapers. I think St. Albert will have a big long thick board in the sky with a medium sized store on top. I think St. Albert will have a new transportation it will have like space ships that even kids can fly! I think St. Albert will have a new way to get cats out of a tree it comes in pink and blue and all the colors! It has like a backwards L then with a fan stuck on top of it and then the person peddles and away it goes!!!! I think St. Albert will have a button in every house that when a person presses it a big bubble goes over the house. I think St. Albert will have a special picture that any one can buy (if they have lots of money) and whenever somebody has a guest in that they don’t like they just walk over to the picture and press the picture’s eyes and they’d pop out and push the person or people out. I think St. Albert will have taken down Ronald Harvey elementary school and build a bran new school it still will be called Ronald Harvey Elementary school but it will have four or five floors and if you want to learn French…. Just go through a special door and it’s a whole different school (everybody would speak French). I think St. Albert will have a special machine you put a book in it and it reads it.” (Cheryl, Grade 2)
